Riders will sometimes come to a standstill in an effort to make their opponent take the lead which is the least advantageous position before the final sprint to the finish.
Individual sprint is part of the Olympic Games.
Qualification consists of flying start 200 meters time trials. The time trial is followed by knockout heats with fastest rider facing the slowest rider. From the quarterfinals on, the riders race best of three heats.
The starting position for a heat is determined by drawing lots. The rider drawing number 1 starts on the inside of the track. In two-heat races, the other rider takes the position on the inside of the track in the second heat. For the deciding round, a fresh draw takes place.
